One with a little texture can also work well to get a solid portrait of the teen in the cap and gown. If you’re on-location, use a solid-colored wall as a background. But it is a nice addition to the gallery to have cap and gown photos. This is more for the parents than the teen. Have the teen bring their cap and gown to the session as well. Create a makeshift field or go to the actual field and photograph the teen there. The same goes for teens who are into sports. They will be more comfortable engaging in activities or hobbies they like and less stressed about the photo shoot. It shows a lot more personality and often looks more natural. Create a “busking set” on the street where the teen is playing or posing with the guitar.Ĭreating these outdoor studios or on-location setups can add more of a narrative about who the teen is right now before going off to college or becoming an adult. You can also go to an outdoor cafe, a public library, or even a bookstore and photograph the senior there. You can also do this on location.įor example, create a small reading area in a library if the teen is into reading. Now that you’ve had your senior portrait pre-consultation, it’s time to use all of those answers.Ĭreate different “sets” for the photos, especially if you’re photographing the teen in an outdoor studio, to tailor to the teen’s hobbies or activities. Create Outdoor “Sets” to Showcase the Teen’s Personality and Hobbies This is a great way to get an idea of what you are shooting for in terms of final products. Will they make graduation announcement cards? Party invites? Ask them what they plan to use the photos for. Keep the conversation focused on them and keep it light.Īsk the parents for input since they will most likely want photos for their home, desk, family, and friends. That way, the teen won’t feel like the consultation is an interrogation. You will also be able to get a read on their personality when you meet face-to-face.Ĭreating a questionnaire can be more productive. These questions will help you to suggest the best outdoor locations and times of day for the session. You can ask them about their hobbies, activities, favorite music, where they like to spend their time, how they feel about becoming adults, etc. Make sure you have questions ready before the teen comes to the meeting. It’s important to have a pre-consultation where you can ask questions and get to know the senior better. Seniors come into their own personalities and have their own ideas about how the session should unfold. Having them choose outfits, locations, and props can help to make the session more personalized and meaningful to both the teen and the parents. No, senior photo sessions invite the still teenager (almost adult) to be an active participant in their photo session. Senior photo sessions aren’t just about getting solid portraits for parents to showcase during graduation celebrations. Buy from Unavailable 10 Indoor and Outdoor Senior Picture Ideas The 4% rule (of thumb) states that, as long as you can live off of 4% of your portfolio’s value each year (adjusted for inflation), there’s a good chance you will never run out of money. Saving money is great, but what really makes all of this possible? And how does someone with a $1M portfolio make it last for the rest of their lives? The (not-so-secret) secret behind this is the 4% rule-or, perhaps more aptly named, the 4% rule of thumb. And that begs the question… How Much Money Do You Need to Retire? More people than ever were flocking towards the core principles of FI- valuing time and freedom over money.īut you do need money to retire. And after 2008, in the wake of the financial crisis, it grew rapidly in popularity. With that, the FI community, albeit small, began to form. Maybe not the first, but certainly one of the most impactful instances in which the tradeoff between money and time was made abundantly clear. Money is something we choose to trade our life energy for. In just a few incredibly influential words, Robin writes: The modern definition of FI, however, likely came with the 1992 book, Your Money or Your Life, by Vicki Robin. A sentiment popular in the FIRE movement today. Then, in the 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Self Reliance” and Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden” both speak to finding happiness within, instead of pursuing material gain. Two fundamental building blocks of financial independence. Ben Franklin, for instance, published an essay “The Way to Wealth” in 1758. While it may have lacked an official name, the principles of FI have been around for centuries. That is the secret to achieving financial independence.īut before we go further, let’s take a step back to answer the following question. Then, instead of letting money erode with inflation in a bank account, you invest it. If I could give you all six words that sum up how to be good with money, in a nutshell, it would be these six words.Īccording to Jillian, you can grow the gap by increasing your income or reducing expenses. Jillian from Choose FI, a podcast with some of the most influential voices in the FI community, shares the following sentiment: You have your income, your expenses, and the difference between the two. The FIRE FormulaĪchieving financial independence boils down to a simple formula. Sound interesting? Read on to learn what makes all of this possible. It’s the freedom to shape your life and to decide for yourself what comes next. More than anything else, financial independence is about giving you the power of choice. I didn’t have to retire early to start living my ideal life. I’ve designed my life around what I value most-health, relationships, creativity, adventure, and energizing work. In fact, the concept of lifestyle design-or building the life you want now, instead of waiting for early retirement-has been growing in popularity. And while that is true for some, it’s far from the norm. If you heard of the FIRE movement before, you may associate it with extreme frugality and minimalistic living. To break the paradigm of 9-5 work until you hit 65.įor many in the financial independence (FI) community, the ultimate goal is to retire early (RE).īut for others, it means leaving their 9-5 job to follow their passions, without the financial insecurity that would normally come along with doing so. And as more people joined, it became a movement. With a shared goal in mind, those interested in financial independence formed a community. The Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) Movement But it is possible-and simpler than you may think. Reaching financial independence takes time, dedication, and a complete shift in mindset. Sound impossible? I assure you, it’s not. When people reach financial independence, it’s not unheard of for them to retire before 50, 40, or even 30! So, a starting $1M portfolio would theoretically be worth the same-if not more-in 20 or 30 years. Instead, the goal is to live off of investment earnings and other sources of passive income. This is not a new concept traditional retirees have (ideally) met this definition for decades! There are, however, two major distinctions between financial independence and traditional retirement.įirst, the plan is not to cash out on savings in retirement. Financial independence is defined as having enough saved to no longer rely on a 9-5 job. Dichlorphenamide increases potassium excretion and can cause hypokalemia and should be used cautiously with other drugs that may cause hypokalemia including laxatives. While lubiprostone may cause diarrhea as a side effect, drug discontinuation alone may resolve the diarrhea.ĭichlorphenamide: (Moderate) Use dichlorphenamide and lubiprostone together with caution. In general, it would be illogical to concurrently administer crofelemer in combination with lubiprostone. Monitor serum potassium levels to determine the need for potassium supplementation and/or alteration in drug therapy.Ĭalcium Phosphate, Supersaturated: (Moderate) Sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous should not be combined with additional laxatives or purgatives when being used to evacuate the bowel prior to colonic radiologic examinations or surgery.Ĭrofelemer: (Moderate) Crofelemer, through its local effects as an antidiarrheal on chloride channels in the intestine, may theoretically antagonize the pharmacologic effects of lubiprostone. In general, it would be illogical to concurrently administer antidiarrheals in combination with lubiprostone.īumetanide: (Moderate) Loop diuretics may increase the risk of hypokalemia especially in patients receiving prolonged therapy with laxatives. The clinical significance of these potential interactions is uncertain.īelladonna Opium: (Moderate) Opium can decrease GI motility and may antagonize the effects of drugs used to treat constipation, such as lubiprostone. However, lubiprostone may cause diarrhea as a side effect, but drug discontinuation alone may resolve the diarrhea.Īnticholinergics: (Moderate) Antimuscarinic drugs can promote constipation and pharmacodynamically oppose the action of drugs used for the treatment of constipation, such as lubiprostone. In general, it would be illogical to concurrently administer antidiarrheals in combination with lubiprostone. Patients should be aware of the risk of syncope and hypotension during treatment.Īlosetron: (Moderate) Alosetron can decrease GI motility and may antagonize the effects of drugs used to treat constipation, such as lubiprostone. Several cases reported concomitant use of medications known to lower blood pressure, which may increase the risk for the development of syncope or hypotension. Although syncope and hypotension generally resolved following lubiprostone discontinuation or prior to next dose, recurrence has been reported with subsequent doses. Concomitant diarrhea or vomiting was noted in some patients prior to developing the adverse reaction. Most cases occurred in patients taking 24 mcg twice daily and some occurred within an hour after taking the first dose or subsequent doses of lubiprostone. Cases of syncope and hypotension, some requiring hospitalization, have been reported during postmarketing experience with lubiprostone. Patients who experience diarrhea and vomiting with lubiprostone have an increased risk of syncope and hypotension. Patients should be informed of this side effect and should notify their health care provider if the diarrhea becomes severe. Diarrhea is a common adverse effect of lubiprostone. Lubiprostone should not be administered to patients with severe diarrhea. The soil should be easy to drain away any extra water. This plant’s natural habitat is relatively arid and is, therefore, adapted to grow on the same type of substrate. Therefore, if your area experiences freezing temperatures, keep the plant indoors so you can control the temperature artificially. Temperatures below 15 oc can cause damage to the plant. This stick plant is not cold-hardy at all. It does best with temperatures above 21 oC, and higher temperatures are preferred during the plant’s growing season. The other vital consideration on placement is temperature, a crucial determinant of your plant’s health. You could move a houseplant outdoors for four to six hours if it proved difficult for it to get sufficient light inside the house. The plant needs the most light, and you should see it gets it. A room painted in bright colors is an added advantage because it reflects light ensuring your pant gets the most of it.ĭevil’s backbone active growth season is in spring and summer. You should then keep the plant about one foot from the window to allow it to absorb the most sunlight possible. Suppose you grow Euphorbia Tithymaloides in the house, the best place to position it is near the western or southern windows, which allow direct sunlight into the house. Sufficient light is necessary for some of this plant’s processes, such as flowering, so keeping it in the dark isn’t good for its health. If you want to grow the plant outdoors, you don’t need to worry about the sun’s intensity it can handle it. However, it can survive in partial shade. This plant is supremely light-hardy, and it is improbable that light would affect it negatively. The following is how you take care of Euphorbia Tithymaloides. Sometimes the latex has been added to mil to act as an emetic. Latex (white sap) has also been used to treat insect stings, ear aches, callouses, ringworms, warts, umbilical hernias, and other skin conditions. They use it as an antidote for snake venom. Wear garden gloves when pruning or transplanting to avoid possible skin irritation. The people of South Africa have been using the plant as traditional medicine. Take care to locate the plant where it won’t be in contact with children and pets. Parts of this plant contain a milky sap that can irritate skin and may be harmful if eaten. While moist soil is preferred, pots should have drainage holes so the roots do not become over saturated and sit in water for extended periods of time. It prefers sandy soil that is well-drained and nutrient-rich so any cactus or succulent mixes work well. Similarly, they can tolerate low water (or even extended periods without) but will have more vigorous growth with regular watering. While devil’s backbone will grow in low light conditions, they will often get leggy and reach towards a light source, so generally speaking full to mostly sun conditions are best. Growing Instructions: Full sun, moderate water Other Names: Zigzag plant, Pedilanthus tithymaloides Height: 18 to 24 inches (46 to 61 cm) up to 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 m) Origination: tropical, subtropical North and Centeral America While devils backbone grows best with sunny locations with regular watering, it can also tolerate some shade and periods without water. Gaining it’s common name from the unusual segmented stem that grows back and forth, Devil’s Backbone also happens to be easy to grow. With zig-zaggy stems that grow upwards and variegated foliage with a little pink blush Devil’s Backbone makes an attractive houseplant, or is perfect for sprucing up outdoor locations in the warmer zones. Scientific Name: Euphorbia tyithymaloides variegatus Devil’s Backbone, Euphorbia tyithymaloides variegatus, 4in Potted Plant, Succulent Plants, Euphorbiaceae This is a belief expressed by not only the men in the story, but also the women. Submission included the acceptance of the fact that they are inadequate and uninformed. Women were seen as unfit members of a society. Essentially, her status does not detract from her main point it allows her to garner attention and use her “inferiority” successfully. In her story, Antigone takes advantage of the insignificance of women and their words in order to dramatize her argument. This allows her character to develop her main claim and show the argument’s prominence through the manipulation of the system that she demonstrates. Her issue is one of importance and universality, all members of her culture recognize the significance of family. Antigone is the wrench thrown in the political works. Kreon is her uncle and Polyneices is his family too, although Kreon constructs a hierarchical system that secures his power. It is precisely this personal disagreement that elevates her argument. Antigone’s righteous intentions fall in disagreement with the egotistical priorities of the men in her society, such as her uncle Kreon. The resonance that the behavior of Antigone bears upon her culture demonstrates the fragility of the system. Although, there is no overwhelming decision that surrounds Antigone’s central conflict: rules of order that seem to be in contradiction, such as power, family, fate, and obligation. Kreon’s death signifies the lessons he has learned and the agony that his immoral actions have caused both him and others. Additionally, there is no real resolution present in Antigone’s story. At times, tragedy is necessary to unveil the obvious. The story of Antigone demonstrates the paradoxical qualities of society. Antigone lives in a world with a broken system, yet we argue that it is precisely this flaw that allows her to adopt her voice. This message would not have resonated in a culture that embraced women. Antigone’s bold claims allow her to assume a prominent position while facing her own death. Antigone defies her king and uncle in defense of her brother, a rebel of the state, yet in Antigone’s view her brother deserves a proper burial. The patriarchal system of Antigone’s time reduced the image of women to timid creatures who are incapable of making decisions, and are therefore undeserving of a platform for communication. The understanding of women as inferior and undeserving of a voice is essential to the recognition of Antigone’s role in her society. Sophocles’ Antigone demonstrates this truth. The contextual power of culture and ingrained tradition supports multiple interpretations of morality. Accusations of the extreme are polluted by one’s surroundings. Although, the circumstances and consequences of actions broaden the picture and allow for condemnation or justification. Morality is often regarded as objective, completely black and white. His 1982 release, Zombie Birdhouse, was a weird, arty collaboration with Blondie’s Chris Stein and Clem Burke that would be his final statement for four years. Iggy spent the first half of the ’80s attempting to strike out on his own with the New Values, Soldier and Party albums, only the first of which was any kind of triumph the others combined self-pastiche with poorly chosen covers (“Sea Of Love,” “Time Won’t Let Me”). Bowie even played keyboards on the subsequent tour, documented on one of the most half-assed live albums of all time, TV Eye: Live 1977. Eager to retreat from the unmanageable success of his own Ziggy Stardust and Thin White Duke personae, he dragged Pop to Berlin, where he produced Iggy’s first two solo albums: The Idiot and Lust For Life, released in March and September of that year, respectively. In 1977, though, Bowie stepped into the breach again. By the following year, the Stooges were fully dead, and Iggy was about to vanish down a rabbit hole of heroin addiction. Sadly, neither album sold very well, and it was up to fan and friend David Bowie to attempt CPR on Iggy’s career with 1973’s Raw Power - the first of many such interventions. The Stooges effectively ended the ’60s with their sullen, minimalistic self-titled debut, produced by the Velvet Underground’s John Cale they launched the ’70s with the follow-up, the life-altering Fun House, produced by Don Gallucci of garage-rock one-hit wonders the Kingsmen (“Louie Louie”). Iggy’s art balances primitivism and smart popcraft (no pun intended), and avant-gardists have frequently been drawn to his unique fervor. From that moment on, the Iggy cult - small, but fervent - was in full force as the man himself spent show after show flipping, writhing, diving off the stage, and gashing himself with broken glass, while still managing to deliver shockingly smart and perceptive lyrics in a leonine baritone. ( Watch Henry Rollins, no slouch as a live act himself in the Rollins Band days, describe what it’s like to share a bill with Iggy.) He first vaulted into the public consciousness in 1970, when the Cincinnati Pop Festival was broadcast on TV and a shirtless Iggy walked out into the audience, balancing on their hands, caught a jar of peanut butter hurled from the darkness, and began smearing it on his chest, while onstage his band the Stooges kept right on cranking out their slablike, psychedelic, grunge-inventing riffs. Since 1969, his whirling, explosive live performances have set a standard that 99 percent of rock artists have utterly failed to meet. Iggy Pop is the beating heart of rock ‘n’ roll. Spanish colonization devastated the indigenous population, particularly through disease, but also through forced relocation, especially to the San Gabriel Mission, which was established in 1771. area, the SGV was home to the Tongva (later Gabrielino), who lived in villages along the Rio Hondo and in canyons along the Arroyo Seco. Its contemporary reality has been shaped by layered histories of indigenous settlement conquest and colonization exploitation of land, labor, and resources through large landholding regimes regional economies suburbanization and transpacific circuits of immigration and capital.Īs SGV scholar Gilda Ochoa has pointed out, the history of the area, as throughout the Southwestern U.S., is “one of conquest, labor, exploitation, racism, and discrimination.” Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, like most of what would become the greater L.A. Today it is the largest majority Latina/o and Asian American region in the U.S. – and a notable site of working and middle-class Chicana/o history – but also east of Little Tokyo, east of Chinatown, and an ancestral home of the indigenous Gabrielino/Tongva people. While less well-known than L.A.’s San Fernando Valley and often ignored or overlooked in popular media, the SGV is tremendously important to Los Angeles history as well as a historically and culturally significant area in its own right. It is home to around 2 million residents – approximately one-fifth of L.A. The SGV’s nearly 400 square miles (within which El Monte and South El Monte sit squarely in the southern center) span from the edges of the city of Los Angeles on the west, to Pomona in the east, the towering San Gabriel Mountains in the north, and northeastern Orange County to the south. As a whole, the SGV is a vast area stretching from east of East L.A. – SGV streetwear brand “Chimexica Flag T-shirt” description, 2012 Įl Monte and South El Monte make up two of the 31 incorporated cities and numerous unincorporated communities encompassed by the San Gabriel Valley (SGV). The SGV is a region of America where a lot of Chinese and Mexicans have learned to live together, most of the time in harmony. Other ways to create 3D effects without using glasses requires some sophisticated hardware that is built into the device. Therefore separation must be created between the background and the subject. The subject of the image, let’s say the person, is considered the nearest to the viewer’s eye. You are basically using this to define the nearness of an object is to your viewpoint in the image.įor example, in the depth map, the background is considered the farthest away from the viewer. It provides details of depth based on how near and how far away, in terms of perspective, a part of the image is. A depth map simply creates a distance representation of your image from a reference point. That is a more complicated topic for this discussion.Īnother way to create a 3D image requires processing what is called a depth map. It is actually your brain that processes the information from what you see that creates the 3D effect. Notice that the 3D glasses have different color filters for each eye, typically red and cyan. However this requires using a color filter to view e.g. This creates the image by layering different colors to create a stereoscopic image to represent a 3D image. Originally it was done by creating what is called an anaglyph. There are different ways to create a 3D image. 3D imaging is supported via Facebook’s API that renders the image using algorithms that takes depth information to create a 3D rendering in a 2D space (your display). It is supported on most all popular web browsers like Google Chrome, Brave, Firefox and Safari. No specialized hardware is needed other than your smartphone screen or computer monitor display. That is not only amazing, but it does not require 3D glasses or headset. Facebook, the social media app, now offers a way to render 3D images on your browser. The critical race theory emphasis on equity rather than equality is also important to understand. None of this is inconsistent with the fact that Jews have privileges that people of color lack. Jewish critical race theory scholars like Rubin would agree with that. It’s certainly true that the powerful, privileged Jew has been part of a worldwide antisemitic trope for centuries, and it’s also true that antisemitism continues in the Trump years and beyond. and its critique of the Israel/Palestine conflict, According to Bernstein, critical race theory promotes antisemitism through its promotion of the Jewish privilege trope, its failure to give Jews credit for being successful in higher education, its promotion of “equity” rather than “equality,” its attempts to limit discussion about the nature of racial conflict in the U.S. There are other issues raised by Jewish critics of critical race theory as evidenced by an opinion piece by David Bernstein, founder of the Jewish Institute for Liberal Values, in The Daily Phil newsletter. This is not something that is unique to Jews since, for example, Asian people, many of whom currently own businesses in Black communities, can also be described as a middleman minority. Sociologists have described Jews as a “middleman minority” group that lacks power over the non-Jewish elite above them but that has power over the people of color below them.
